[Class 94 (i).] Balls of wool, soap tablets and the like are packed in cartons which are closed and sealed. The wool D is placed in concave carriers C on a conveyer A and is fed along a frame B. A rocking finger F presses each ball of wool against a stop E, in which position it is compressed by a plate g2 on a lever G. A plunger H then forces the ball into a carton J located in a holder K on an intermittently rotating table M. A slot b<1> accommodates the tail d<1> of the wool, and the face of the plunger is notched at h<1> to guide it centrally into the carton. The holders K comprise walls and stops k<1> of a height approximately one-third of that of the carton in a prone position. The cartons, which may be of the kind described in Specification 390,592, are introduced at X, the flaps are opened out at Y, and, after filling, are closed and secured by a label at subsequent stages. The label serves to hold the tail d<1> in position. On arrival at a point opposite to the filling position, an ejector N, having depending flanges n<1>, moves the packet in front of a plunger Q, which forces it along a guide P. A slot S accommodates the tail d<1>. The wall R of the guide presses the top flaps of the carton, and is open beneath to avoid interference with the tail of wool, which may be secured to the carton by a label.
