[Class 82 (i).] In a process of recovering pure magnesium from crude magnesium or material containing magnesium such as magnesia, dolomite &c. by vaporizing the magnesium and condensing the vapours, the liquid condensate is caused to drop into a hydrocarbon oil. Magnesium vapours from a distillation chamber 1 are condensed on the surface of a condenser 5 contained in a vessel 4, the lower portion of which is outside the heating chamber 2 and may be cooled if desired, and the liquid magnesium drops into oil in the lower portion of the vessel. The vessel may be evacuated by means of a pipe 6. Solid magnesium is discharged through a lock chamber 9 without breaking the vacuum. The oil may be refined for further use by circulating it by means of a pump 12 through a filter 13. The process may be applied to compact magnesium dust such for example as is produced by the process described in Specification 362,835. Magnesium compounds may be reduced with agents such as aluminium or silicon, the mixture being passed in a current of inert or reducing gas through a heated chamber and the disengaged magnesium vapour after passing through a dust separator being condensed and allowed to drop into oil.
