Abstract
418,540. Controlling aircraft. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., Cranford Lane, Hayes, and WILLIAMS, D. L. H., Hillside, Swakeley's Road, Ickenham, both in Middlesex. Nov. 23, 1933. No. 32812. [Class 4.] An aircraft control surface is provided with two servo-flaps j, d, the smaller flap j being adapted to be actuated by the pilot through screw or like gear t so that it can be set normally to maintain the control surface at a selected angle ; the flap d is normally inactive and is adapted to be actuated by the pilot so that its effect may be superposed algebraically on that of the flap j to move the control surface, temporarily, to some other selected angle. As shown, port and starboard elevators a, bare torsionally interconnected su as to move together and movement of the gear t through a chain x and a sprocket-wheel is communicated to the flap j through a rod r, a bell-crank lever p, q, a guided two-part rod m jointed at n, and an arm on the flap. The flap d is actuated by known means e, f, g, h. Each elevator may have two servo-flaps, in which case they are not connected and the servo-flaps may be arranged for inverse working by connecting a second rod r to the gear t.
