Abstract

Carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide are obtained in a continuous cyclic process in which sulphites such as calcium sulphite are treated with gases containing sulphur dioxide and the resulting bisulphites are treated with carbonates, e.g. calcium, magnesium, sodium or potassium carbonates, with the production of pure carbon dioxide and sulphites, a part of the sulphites thus obtained being returned to the first step of the cycle and the remainder being treated with an acid to liberate pure sulphur dioxide. According to a modification an alkali sulphate, e.g. sodium sulphate is treated at the same time as calcium sulphite with gases containing sulphur dioxide, the alkali bisulphite obtained after the separation of calcium sulphate being treated with calcium carbonate with the production of carbon dioxide, calcium sulphite and alkali sulphite, the calcium sulphite being returned to the cycle, the alkali sulphite being caustified, say by means of lime, and the resulting sulphite after separation from the caustic lye being treated with an acid such as nitric or sulphuric acid to produce sulphur dioxide and salts such as calcium nitrate or sulphate. Potassium sulphate may be used instead or sodium sulphate or barium carbonate instead of calcium carbonate. The caustisation of the sodium sulphate may be omitted, the sulphite being treated directly with nitric acid, sodium nitrate being produced.
