Abstract

417,997. Surgical splints and bedsteads; tension apparatus. PORTEOUS, J., Parkmount, Lasswade Road, Liberton, Edinburgh. April 10, 1933, No. 10693. [Class 81 (ii).] A splint for maintaining the body in a rigid prostrate position comprises longitudinal members or runners a, which are adjustable as to their distance apart by means of bolts h, and hinged side flaps b fixable in a vertical position. Leg slats c are pivoted on the runners to allow abduction, being supported by a crossbar j and fixed by means of thumbscrews p and segmental arms k. A body mattress, a buttock mattress, and two leg mattresses are provided being supported by slots l, m and the leg slats c. The buttock mattress is adapted to be withdrawn horizontally. The runners are provided with lifting handles g and carry the flaps b provided with arm rests or crutches b<1>. Each leg slat carries an adjustable bracket f for one or more pulleys over which cords pass for weight attachment, while hoops s support the bedclothes. For treatment of flexed limbs, a double inclined plane v, Fig. 3, is fitted, traction being applied to the thigh and leg independently by means of pulleys e<1>, e<2>. Foot rests u connected to the leg by adjustable straps may be provided. Packing can be inserted under the body mattress to produce hyperextension of the spine.
