[Classes 20 (iii) and 137.] A sound-proof window comprises two or three panes arranged in parallel or substantially parallel planes and some distance apart, the panes being provided with slots and associated deflecting means which permit of ventilation but impede the passage of sound waves. According to one construction, the window comprises two glazed frames 4, 5, hinged at 6, 7, respectively to an outer fixed or sliding frame 1. The panes 2, 3, of the frames 4, 5, have aligned, centrally disposed, horizontal slots 8, 9, and clipped or otherwise secured to the edges of these slots are two sheet-metal deflecting plates 10, 11. The opposed faces of these plates are parallel to one another and are covered by a layer 14 of felt or like sound-absorbing material. The frames 4, 5, are held in their closed positions by ball-catches 16. The slots may alternatively be formed by the gaps between the top and bottom glasses forming a pane, and may be in vertical alignment or staggered. In a modification, the window has three glazed frames, the outer two being hinged to the window frame and provided with slots and associated deflecting means, while the inner frame is fixed and has a slot which is staggered with respect to the slots in the outer frames.
