Abstract

415,481. Jacking and manoeuvring motor vehicles. BERMAN, S., 29, Oxford Street, London. Jan. 5, 1934, No. 2856/33. [Class 79 (iii).] A motor vehicle equipped with a plurality of jacks whereby it may be raised bodily off the ground to be movable on transverse wheels in which the lower ends of the jacks terminate, is characterized in that means are provided for driving one or more of the jack wheels and also for steering the vehicle whilst so supported. In the form shown, four hydraulic jacks, clamped two to each axle, are operated by a pump h driven by an electric motor j, the wheels being mounted in forked extensions e<3>, f<3> of the jack plungers. The forks e<3> of the off side pair of jacks are formed with arms e<5> coupled by linkage p, p<1> to the ordinary steering means q on the vehicle, whilst the wheels of the near side pair of jacks are adapted to be driven from a pinion m on the propeller shaft c. For this purpose each near side jack wheel f<4> carries a toothed gear wheel f<5> in mesh with a worm f<6> on a shaft f<7> held in a bracket f<8> attached to the fork whilst its upper splined end passes through a pinion f<9> rotatably mounted in a bracket f<8a> attached to the jack casing f. The pinions f f<9> on the front and rear jacks mesh with worm or skew gears n<9> on a connecting shaft n<10>, the rear one of such skew gears n<9> also meshing with a pinion n<8> on a transverse shaft n<6> connected by skew gears n<4> to a lay shaft n carrying a pinion n<3> slidable into and out of mesh with the pinion m on the propeller shaft. The pinion n<3> is adapted automatically to be slid into and out of mesh with the pinion m as the jacks are lowered or raised by means of a double bell-crank linkage 0<2>, 0<3>, 0<4>, Fig. 8, co-operating with stop f<10>, f<11> on the jack fork f<3>. The stop f<10> may also be utilized to open a switch to stop the motor j when the jacks are fully extended. In place of the stop f<11> a spring may be provided to withdraw the pinion n<2> when the jacks are raised. Valves may be provided to enable the jacks to be operated individually for wheelchanging &c., whilst brakes may be provided on the jack wheels or on the shaft n<10>, or the ordinary car-brakes acting through the gear m &c. may be utilized to control the jack wheels.
