Abstract
414,764. Mechanical frequency standards. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., Connaught House, Aldwych, London.-(Tournier, M. C. ; 46, Avenue de Breteuil, Paris.) Feb. 13, 1933, No. 4359. [Class 40 (v).] Relates to mechanical frequency standards such as piezo-electric crystals, and has for its object the elimination of spurious resonances. According to one aspect of the invention, the crystal 1, is freely supported and its nodal lines 2, 3, are determined, as by dusting the vibrating crystal with lycopodium powder. The crystal is then loaded along the nodal lines, e.g. by spots of paint, and /or supported by means of at least three sharp points, not in a straight line, chosen on the nodal lines. According to another aspect of the invention, the figure assumed by the lycopodium powder is photographed, and a hill-and-dale reproduction used to support the crystal. Other means for damping spurious vibrations include bevelling the edges of the crystal, (Figs. not shown) and damping the edges with paint or spongy rubber.
