[Class 8 (i).] In suction-cleaners having converter attachments, a valve is provided for closing the air passage between the suction nozzle of the fan chamber which valve is connected with the pivoted handle for movement into its closed position when the converter attachment is to be used. Pivoted to the lower wall of the fan chamber 3 is a spindle 20 carrying two flap valves 21 adapted to close the passage from the nozzle to the fan chamber, but normally held by a spring 21<a> in the open position. To close the valve the spindle 20 is rotated through a gear 22 meshing with a toothed quadrant 23 attached to the operating arm 25 which is adapted to be engaged by the endpiece 33 of the pivoted handle 34 when pushed into its forward position. Mounted on the main body is a cylindrical housing 29 extending transversely and containing a rotatable tubular valve 30 having slots adapted to register with a port which opens into the passage 5. Secured to the ends of the tubular member 30 is a U-shaped tubular member 33 forming the bottom of the handle 34. When the handle 34 is pushed forwardly the arrangement is such that air passes through the hollow handle and the converter attachment which forms a continuation of the hollow handle. A sector 39 is provided with detents co-operating with the spring pressed plunger 41 on the fitting 33 whereby the handle may be retained in its forward or rearward positions.
