Abstract

414,595. Cooling rear-engined motor vehicles. TENNANT, W. J., 111, Hatton Garden, London.-(Tatra Works, Ltd. ; 200, Kartouzskß, Smichov, Prague.) Feb. 21, 1934, No. 5756. [Class 79 (iii).] Inlet openings 20, 18 are provided in the sides and rear top portion of a streamlined motor vehicle to facilitate cooling a (preferably aircooled) rear engine. The engine 10, changespeed mechanism 11, axle casing 12 together with the driving and rear wheel suspension gear are formed as a unit on which the rear end of the chassis is mounted, preferably by the arms of a bifurcated extension of a central longitudinal frame beam. A space 14, closed at the front by flaps or doors, situated behind the seats 15, and confined by a wall 16, may form a luggage recess. Partitions 20<1> are provided behind the openings 20 to form passages 21 communicating with a passage 23 formed by means of a partition 22 and leading from the openings 18 which are provided with adjustable hinged covers. Air entering the openings passes to fans 26 which force it past the engine cylinders to exhaust apertures 25 located behind the partition 22 and on either side of an air-guiding fin 24. The passages 21 may extend forwardly to the back of the seats and the entire rear portion of the body covering 17 may be hinged at 29 to facilitate access to the engine. The cylinders are arranged in V-form and two fans one on each side are provided. The exhaust apertures may be situated at a position where a strong suction persists in order to diminish the air resistance. The exhaust-silencer 27 may be housed in a recess or may be placed beneath the car body.
