Abstract

In the production of ketene, a substance capable of yielding it, such as acetone, is passed through a metallic preheating chamber made of a material resistant to heat and oxidation, such as iron-chromium alloys, and then through a metallic reaction chamber made of a material free from iron, nickel, and related metals and having a melting point above about 800 DEG C. The reaction chamber may be of copper. Acetone is supplied from a tank 9 by way of a pump 11 and pipe 10 to a vaporizing section 12 which may be of steel or iron in which the acetone is vaporized and reaches a temperature not exceeding about 300 DEG C. at a point 14. The vapour then passes into a part 15 which may be of iron-chromium alloy in which it attains about 500 DEG C., and may reach 575 DEG C. at the point 16; the vapour then passes to the cracking-tube or reaction chamber 17 which is <PICT:0413709/III/1> preferably of copper, and may be protected by a shell 18 of more resistant material such as iron-chromium alloy. The temperature of the vapours at the outlet of the cracking tube may be 650 DEG C., the pressure may be about 5 lb. per square inch, and the time of exposure of the vapour to the cracking temperature may be 0,25 to 0,75 seconds as described in Specification 377,574.ALSO:<PICT:0413709/IV/1> In the production of ketene, a substance capable of yielding it, such as acetone, is passed through a metallic preheating chamber made of a material resistant to heat and oxidation, such as iron-chromium alloys, and then through a metallic reaction chamber made of a material free from iron, nickel, and related metals and having a melting point above about 800 DEG C.
