Abstract

For the manufacture of artificial silk, films, plastic masses, intermediate layers of laminated glass, lacquers &c., there are employed cellulose fatty acid esters obtained from primary cellulose tri-esters in the preparation of which have been used catalysts which do not remain in combined form in the cellulose ester, in particular with the exclusion of sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, bisulphates and sulphuryl chloride, by subjecting these esters in the undissolved condition to a gentle after-treatment with acid saponifying agents in such a manner that the acid content of the ester does not diminish by more than 5 per cent. Operating in this manner, the useful properties of the primary esters are retained and there is an improvement in the elasticity and extension in many cases even with a reduction of acid content of one per cent; substantially no change of solubility characteristics occurs, except in the case of mixed esters. The primary cellulose esters may be prepared with the aid of the catalysts of Specification 363,700, and in particular by a process such that the original fibrous structure of the cellulose is retained, as by the addition of cyclohexanol acetate, ethyl acetate, benzene toluene or ligroin. In examples, artificial silk, films &c. are made from primary cellulose tri-acetates prepared with the aid of perchloric acid or zinc chloride as catalysts, after subjecting these esters to treatment at room temperature with 3 N-hydrochloric acid, 1-1,5 N-nitric acid or 1,5 N-perchloric acid or a mixture of acetic and perchloric acids; or from a cellulose acetate-isovalerianate made according to the process of Specification 396,575, after treatment at 20 DEG C. with 1,5 N-nitric acid.
