Convention date, Feb. 17, 1932. [Class 40 (iv).] In a multiplying scheme primarily for line switches and call finders, the subscribers' lines are divided into groups A, B, C .... , while the trunks to which they are to be connected are divided into groups a, b, c, ...... , and each group of trunks is arranged to be first choice to the correspondingly lettered group of lines and second choice to another group of lines, so that each switch has access to two partial multiples, the combination being different for each group of switches. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement in which the groups of trunks a, b, c ... terminate in call-finders, denoted by arrow-heads, each having access to two adjacent groups of subscribers' lines. Calls in group B for example are extended normally by the finders of group b, but when all these are in use, the finders of group c are brought into service. Similarly when all the finders of group c are in use, further calls in group C may be dealt with by the finders of group d. Fig. 3<a> shows the corresponding arrangement in which the groups of lines A, B, C, .... terminate in line switches, denoted by arrow-heads, each having access to two adjacent groups of trunks. When the groups of subscribers' lines are sub-divided into sub-groups as shown in these arrangements, the modifications shown in Figs. 4, 4<a> may be adopted whereby the excess calls in different sub-groups of a group are extended over different groups of trunks. When all the trunks of group b are in use for example, further calls in the sub-groups B1-4 of group B are extended respectively over the trunks of groups c, d, e, f. When the arrangement of Fig. 4 is adopted for numerical final selectors, if the final selectors normally serving the wanted group are all in use, it is necessary for the penultimate selector to receive the tens digit in order to select a final selector serving the appropriate sub-group, the tens digit then being repeated thereto.
