Abstract

413,031. Starting prime movers. STARTOMATIC CORPORATION, 1627, West Pico Street, Los Angeles, U.S.A. Jan. 25, 1933, No. 2403. Convention date, Jan. 26, 1932. [Class 38 (iv).] In an automatic starting system for internalcombustion engines, the starter motor SM is controlled by an electromagnetic switch 7, the coil 14 of which is energized on closure of the ignition switch 11 under the control of two sets of contacts 16, 17 in parallel, one, 16, of which is normally open, and the other 17, normally closed, the contacts 16 being controlled electromagnetically in accordance with the motor current and the contacts 17 similarly in accordance with the voltage of the engine driven generator G, by coils 4, 21 respectively. The contacts are biassed to their normal positions by springs 25 and 19. Closure of an ignition switch 11 energizes the coil 14 of the starting switch 7 over the normally closed contacts 17 and causes closure of the switch 7. Cranking current through the coil 4 closes a holding circuit at 16 for the coil 14 so that energization of the generator coil 21 on rotation of the engine, and consequent opening of the contacts 17 does not de-energize the switch 7. On the self-operation of the engine, the motor cranking current diminishes and contacts 16 open to de-energize the coil 14 of the switch 7 which then opens. As long as the engine is self-operative the contacts 17 are maintained open by the generator coil 21 and the starting operation is only repeated if the engine stops unintentionally and de-energizes the coil 21. To prevent premature re-closure of the switch 7 should the engine make a false start, an additional coil assisting the coil 21 may be provided acting on the contacts 17 and energized from across the motor SM so that re-closure of the contacts 17 can only occur when the motor SM is at rest. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 386,704.
