Abstract

412,697. Photo - mechanical screens. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES., Frankfort-on-Main, Germany. Feb. 28, 1933, Nos. 6115, 6116, and 6117. Convention dates, Feb. 29, 1932, Aug. 5, 1932, and Oct. 22, 1932. [Class 98 (ii).] A half-tone screen in which the screen elements are contiguous and the variation of tone is continuous, is obtained by copying an enlarged positive or negative element 1, Fig. 3, having the requisite theoretical distribution of light and shade, by multiple projection through a perforated screen 2 on to a photographic plate 3. The enlarged picture of the element 1 may be made by reducing photographically a vignette such as shown in Fig. 4 and enlarging the resulting picture by soft focus. In place of the enlarged element 1, a set of marks having outlines corresponding to lines of equal blackening may be employed, such marks being placed successively with their centres at exactly the same point and exposed for appropriate times. Duplicates of the improved screens are obtained photographically. For large screens, a number of smaller screens are assembled side by side and printed on to a film of the desired size. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that a mechanically operated diaphragm having a continuously contracting or expanding aperture may be used in place of the set of marks. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
