[Class 97 (iii).] In a golf club having a head of conventional face outline, the weight of the material of the head is so distributed that the turning moments of the masses are equalized about an imaginary axis c<1>-c<1> Figs. 7 and 9, that intersects the shaft axis at the grip and crosses the club head in a substantially central zone of its hitting place. To obtain this distribution of the mass of the head, the heel of the head is made lighter than usual and/or weighting material 17, Fig. 7, or 24, Fig. 9, is attached to or inserted in the toe. The position of the axis c<1>-c<1> of a club is ascertained by the device shown in Fig. 2, and comprising a base 5 provided at one end with a longitudinal knife-edge 9 and at the other with an adjustable slide 7. The club is supported in the device with its head resting on the upper tacky surface of a plate 6 mounted in the knife-edge and with its grip portion resting in a bearing 12 that is pivotally mounted on the slide and permits free rotation of the club about the apex of the knife-edge. The head is adjusted laterally of the plate until the latter balances, when the position of the axis c<1>-c<1> may be marked on the head by a scribe 22 constrained to move in a path parallel to the knife-edge.
