Abstract
411,662. Wrapping- machines. BUREN, J. VAN, 750, Grand Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. May 3, 1933, No. 12928. [Class 94 (i).] Cakes of soap and like articles, which may have been enveloped in a preliminary wrapping of paper, are wrapped in transparent cellulosic material. The wrappers are fed between guides 52 on a table 51, a length being severed by blades 53, 54. A bar 80, supplied with solvent from a reservoir R by a wick 81, is mounted on a lever 83 and is depressed to apply the solvent to the wrapper. The articles are fed over a table 61 and between guides 74 by a horizontal plunger against a plate 115, and a plunger 116 descends to carry the article with the wrapper into a pocket P on a rotary carrier C, folding it about three sides and leaving upstanding edges E, D. At the same time plates 981 on the carrier form the first end tucks. The pockets are formed by spring-pressed side plates 96 and a base 99 mounted on rods 100 frictionally slidable in bores in the carrier. The plunger 116 ascends and the edge D is folded down by a roller 147. The roller is carried on a frame 146, Fig. 2, pivoted at 145 to a horizontally reciprocable frame 135 and is urged downwardly into contact with the wrapper by a spring 148. The roller is circumferentially grooved to minimize contact with the moistened surface of the flap E, the grooved areas being separated by longitudinal strips 165. During the folding operations, the roller is rotated by bevel gearing 150, 152 to effect a tight fold. After the flap D has been folded down, the carrier C rotates through 120‹, and the flap E is folded down by an arcuate stationary plate 170, which may be heated by a coil 171. The plate is mounted on sliding rods 167, springs 169 being interposed to ensure resilient action. Upon arrival at the position of the pocket P<1>, the packet is thrust into a guideway 172 by the action of a plate 105 on the rear end of the sliding rod 100. The sides 173 of the guideway form the van leading end tucks, and the lower broad flaps are folded up by the action of an inclined slot 176. Solvent is now applied to the under surface of the upper broad flaps by wicks carried by tubes 182 intermittently raised into contact with the flaps by belt-crank levers 813. A plate 190 turns about its pivot 196 and carries the packet between plates 199 which turn down the flaps to complete the packet.
