Abstract
411,440. Grinding eccentric knives. MOLINS, W. E., 2, Evelyn Street, Deptford, London. Dec. 5, 1932, No. 34402. [Class 60.] Machine cutters ; grinding in situ.-Apparatus for grinding rotating eccentric knives such as those used for cutting cigarette rod comprises a grinding-wheel eccentrically mounted on a rotatable support 9 whose axis is radially disposed to the path of the knife edge and is directed towards the knife at the instant of grinding. The knife 1 is mounted on a carrier 2 mounted on the yoke 3 of a universal joint 4 located between a shaft 5 parallel to the cigarette rod and a shaft 6. The knife is arranged so that it moves axially at the speed of the rod at the instart of cut-off as described in Specification 324,379, [Class 130]. In Fig. 1, the means for trimming the knife, which act when the knife has substantially no lateral movement, comprises a pair of grinding rollers 7, 8, supported on the disc 9, which is mounted on a shaft 10 driven by gearing from the shaft 6. The grinders may either be freely mounted or they may be rotated positively by gears 11 .. 13. The grinders 7, 8 engage the knife in the position shown in Fig. 2, and the rotation of the disc 9 enables the grinders to follow the eccentric edge of the knife. The disc 9 may be driven at the same speed as the knife or at half the speed. In a modification a single grinding wheel is mounted on a crank arm extending from the shaft 10. 411,448. Grinding cutting - edges. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., BATES, A., BARCLAY, W. R., and HAZELTON, G., Belgrave Road, Leicester. Oct. 1, 1934, No. 11661. Divided on 412,599, [Group VII]. [Class 60.] A machine for trimming heels has a rotary cutter with blades shaped to the contour of the heel and a grinding attachment for sharpening the blades when desired, while maintaining their original contour. A grinding wheel 291 is mounted on the cutter shaft, an adjacent spindle 385 holding the cutter while its blades are ground in succession. A spring plunger 392 holds the cutter against rotation, and is retracted by a handle while the cutter is rotated to bring the next blade into grinding position. The spindle 385 is adjustable about a rod 381, a scale 389 being provided to facilitate this adjustment. This assembly is adjustable towards and away from the grinding wheel by a hand wheel 375 and is mounted on a carriage 349 guided to move vertically by rollers 353 and adjustably supported by a roll 359 engaging a cam 409. The carriage 349 is traversed horizontally by handle 413 linked to a carriage 345 on which the rollers are mounted, the carriage 345 sliding on rails 343, 346. As the latter carriage reciprocates, a lever 419, pivoted to the column 1, causes the cam 409 to reciprocate in the opposite direction, this construction allowing the cam 409 to be longer than if fixed. A trueing diamond is adjustable in the end of an arm 433 movable by a handle 441 about a shaft 431 carried by a member 429 on a shaft 427 journalled in a bracket 425. A spring 439 urges a lug on the member 429 against the end of a screw 437 which is turned to feed the diamond inwardly during the trueing. A hood 443 covers the grinding wheel.
