Abstract

411,141. Stapling. QUICK, C. G., BALL, D. A., and WHITEHEAD, W. A., 109, Borough Road, London. Dec. 1, 1932, No. 34063. [Class 89 (iii).] A clenching die for a rotary stapling mechanism comprises a plate 5 and a member 6 which are, respectively, fixed and pivoted to a block 7 which is bolted in a recess in the die cylinder 4. Springs 16 normally hold the member 6 so that its upper end projects from the periphery of the cylinder, Fig. 1. Co-operating faces 13, 14 on the plate and member then provide a V-shaped recess which acts to turn over the legs of a staple which has been driven through a web W. As the die and stapling cylinders 4, 1 approach the stapling point, the member 6 is forced back by the pressure of the web, so that the plate projects beyond the member 6 and acts to flatten the staple legs against the web.
