Abstract

410,059. Windscreen - cleaners. KLAXON, Ltd., Warwick Road, Greet, Birmingham, and COOK, E. T., Dartmeet, Hedgerley Lane, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire. Aug. 9, 1933, No. 1020/34. Divided on 406,015. [Class 138 (i).] A windscreen-cleaner system for vehicles comprises one or more wiper arms and a driving motor which are mounted on the body work of the vehicle, as distinct from the windscreen itself, each arm being adapted to be moved at will into a position in which it is clear of the screen. In the construction shown, an electric motor 5 arranged under the dashboard of the vehicle is connected by a flexible shaft 15 to worm gearing 14, 16 in a gear box 6. The worm wheel 16 has a crank pin 17 engaging in a slot in a slidable plate 19 which is connected to a rack 7. The rack engages a pinion 8 on a shaft 9 carrying a windscreen-wiper 4 so that the latter is oscillated when the motor is in operation. The rack 7 may be extended to drive a second wiper or several wipers. In a modification the rack is reciprocated by means including a lever which is pivoted at one end and is connected to the rack and to a crank pin on a gear wheel driven by the motor. The pinion 8 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 9 and is adapted to be clutched to it by a pin projecting laterally from the shaft and adapted to enter a slot 30 in the pinion 8. To park the wiper clear of the screen the shaft 9 is pulled axially by the handle 12 against the action of a spring so that the pin is withdrawn from the pinion 8. The handle is then turned through a right angle and released, the pin then seating in a slot 35 in a plate 31 whereby the wiper is retained in a horizontal position. The casings enclosing the pinions 8 and the gear box 6 are spaced apart by tubes 13 enclosing the rack 7. The gear box 6 instead of being at one side of the screen may be arranged between two wiper arms. The driving motor 5 may be arranged beside the gear box, the flexible shaft 15 being dispensed with. Specification 406,015 is referred to.
