Abstract

409,362. Waterproofing-compositions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A. Oct. 31, 1932, No. 30512. Convention date, Nov. 6, 1931. [Class 140.] A waterproofing composition for use on fabrics, paper, &c. comprises, as non-volatile ingredients, a cellulose derivative, a substantial proportion of a water-repellent wax, a non- volatile oil, and, if desired, a plasticizer, dissolved in a suitable solvent mixture, the weight of the oil being equal to or greater than that of the wax, and the combined weight of the oil and the wax being from 2 to 15 times the weight of the cellulose derivative. The total weight of non-volatile ingredients is preferably between 1 and 20 per cent of the total weight of the composition. The cellulose derivative is preferably cellulose nitrate, but cellulose acetate, benzyl or ethyl cellulose or other derivatives may be used. The wax may be Japan wax, hydrogenated sperm oil, ceresin, candelilla, Chinese insect, Bay berry or montan waxes, glyceryl stearate, or glycol stearate. The oil is preferably a non-volatile naphthene base oil such as Petrolatum, but other oils such as neatsfoot, olive, cottonseed, castor, boiled linseed, paraffin or heavy petroleum oils may be used. The plasticizer for the cellulose derivative is preferably a stearate such as butyl stearate or ethoxy ethyl stearate, but dibutyl or tricresyl phthalate may be used. The composition is preferably applied to the fabric or paper by immersion followed by pressure or centrifuging, at room temperature or a higher temperature. On account of the low non- volatile content of the composition, it penetrates easily into fabrics and coats the fibres without affecting the texture of the fabric. In examples, the composition contains : (1) Nitrocotton, high melting paraffin wax, petrolatum, butyl stearate, butyl acetate, ethyl acetate, gasoline, toluol and ethanol ; (2) Nitrocotton, Japan wax, petrolatum, toluol, ethyl acetate and butyl acetate.
