Abstract

Gas fire backs, kiln linings, and other refractory articles are moulded from a mixture of 75 to 85 per cent by weight of asbestos, and 20 to 10 per cent of sodium silicate of 75 DEG Tw., together with water, and a flux such as borax if desired. A specific example for gas fire backs is 100 lbs. asbestos fibre, 5 lbs. borax, and 75 lbs. sodium silicate with an equal weight of water. The ingredients may be sprayed into the mould; for this purpose the apparatus used may be that described in Specification 368,368, [Group X]. Kiln linings may be formed in situ. The articles after moulding or forming in situ are then dried and coated or sprayed with a refractory wash consisting of pottery clay slip 75 ozs., ground fireclay 25 ozs., flour silica 10 ozs., and water 2 1/2 to 3 pints, after which they are rendered refractory by firing at a temperature of 1000 DEG to 1800 DEG F.
