Abstract

408,325. Rotary fans. WORKMAN, R. E., 41, Hamilton Drive, Glasgow. Oct. 8, 1932, No. 28072. [Class 110 (i).] A rotary fan A<1> is housed in a volute casing A, and another volute casing B with a tangential inlet B<1> conducts the entering air to the fan inlet C by a converging spiral path about an axis coincident with the impeller axis. A diaphragm D is fitted in the casing B and is movable laterally towards or from the inlet C to vary the cross-sectional area of the spiral inlet passage, and thus vary the tangential velocity component of the entering air and the fan output. A plate G hinged on a pin G<1> guides the air passing into the spiral inlet. A baffle plate E on a pivot F traverses an aperture in the diaphragm ; it is placed in its radial position E<1> to prevent the formation of a vortex when the diaphragm D is placed at its maximum distance from the inlet C, and inits position E<2> to assist in the formation of a vortex when the diaphragm is moved inwards to reduce the fan output.
