[Class 112.] The needle and shuttle threads of a bootoutsole-sewing machine are severed close to the work by a knife 22, the boot-sole being used as a cutting block. The knife 22 is carried on a rack-bar 24 slidingly mounted in a bracket 26. The tapered end 30 of the rackbar is held in engagement with a roller 32 by a spring plunger 34 and a downward movement of a treadle-rod 46 swings the knife 22 rearwardly and downwardly to the operative position, Fig. 5. Slidingly mounted on the lower end of the rack bar is a shuttle-thread pull-off 48, which carries an oblique finger 52 to deflect the thread into a slot 54 in the presser-foot where it is trapped by a spring-pressed pin 50. The needle thread is clamped before severance against the work plate 6 by a spring-pressed lever 98 which is actuated by the treadle rod. The severed end is withdrawn to the level of the work-plate to be used up in the next seam, by an eccentric pin 60. The pin is mounted on a shaft 64 which is oscillated by the treadle rod. In a modification, instead of withdrawing the needle thread, the excess is removed by a fixed knife as the shoe is fed along the work plate. Specification 174,440, [Class 112], is referred to.
