Abstract
407,993. Floating flame or smokeproducing signal flares. RANKEN, F., 14, Douglas Crescent, Edinburgh, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. Sept. 24, 1932, Nos. 26598 /32 and 29490 /33. [Class 9 (ii).] The flare comprises a hollow metal cylinder A containing a charge N of combustible flame or smoke producing material, a delay fuze or fuzes F adapted to fire the combustible charge a given time after the discharge of the flare from a pistol, and fusible or rupturable waterproof closures C, S at each end of the cylinder, which after its discharge from a pistol and its fall in water is kept afloat vertically by a buoyancy chamber U. The flare is held in the pistol by a wire W in conjunction with a shoulder on the flare or by a spring catch. When the pistol is fired, the bottom closure C is destroyed and the fuzes F ignited. After a given time, the fuzes ignite a primer P, which fires the main charge N and destroys the top closure S. The charge N may then be elevated by a spring G if such an arrangement is provided. The bottom of the buoyancy chamber U may be conical and may have a peripheral ring of holes.
