Abstract

406,438. Ball joints. BOUGHTON, E. B., EMMOTT, W., BROCK, D. T., Brock House, Langham Street, and CLENCH, E. C. S., Deering House, Deering Street, Bond Street, both in London. Nov. 23, 1932, No. 33158. [Class 65 (ii).] In a ball joint, particularly for a tie-rod in the steering gear of a vehicle, the position of the ball is made adjustable relatively to the member to which it is fixed, so that the effective length of the tie rod may be varied ; this is effected by making the ball 9 integral or rigid with a mounting member 4 which is rotatably mounted in the rod end 1 so as to be adjustable about its own axis, this axis being eccentric from the centre of the ball. Rotation of the mounting 4 in its socket in the rod end causes the centre of the ball to move in a small circle and thus to vary its position along the rod ; the ball is locked in position after adjustment by a nut 13 tightening the mounting 4 in its tapered socket. The ball bears in a bush 10 held in a housing on the other member 2 of the joint by a screw cap 12 ; lubricators, loading springs or weather-proof covers may be provided as required. The member 2 may be screw-threaded on to the part of the mechanism to which it is attached, in order to provide for further adjustment.
