[Class 5 (i).] A wrapping-machine comprises an articlefeeding mechanism, a slicing mechanism and a wrapping mechanism all located at successively higher levels, and mechanisms for transferring the articles, such as loaves, successively to the levels of and through the mechanisms, and a delivery mechanism arranged at the level of the wrapping mechanism to deliver the articles to a position vertically above that of the feeding mechanism. The loaves L, Fig. 1, are fed along a feed table 39 by pusher bars 47 on endless chains 49, and arrive on a plate 57, then in its lower position. The plate raises the loaf to the position shown, level with the table 83 of a slicing apparatus, through which it is forced by a pusher 66. The blades 86 of the slicing apparatus are arranged alternately in two separate frames so that the cutting edges of one series enter the loaf shortly after the rear edges of the other series. In this manner the side pressure on each blade is sustained by the thickness of two slices. The blades are tensioned by levers 90, and the frames are actuated by eccentrics 93, 94. The entire slicing apparatus may be laterally withdrawn from the machine to an inoperative position on guide rods 101, a bridge being interposed to take the place of the table 83. A safety switch prevents the starting of the slicer motor when the apparatus has been withdrawn. From the slicing mechanism the loaf passes to the wrapping mechanism.
