Abstract

406,285. Road signals for controlling traffic. JAYNE, J. L. B., 504, Portland Road, Hove, Sussex. Aug. 20, 1932, No. 23395. [Class 118 (ii).] The road pad for a vehicle operated traffic control system has a number of control devices connected in parallel across the width of the mat so that at least one of the devices is operated no matter where the pad is depressed. The various devices may be linked by link bars and two sets of devices may be provided to give directional sense to the pad. As shown in Fig. 5, the pad carries a number of springs 23 which make contact between electric mains 13, 14 and a further number of springs 22 which can connect mains 14, 15. The springs are covered by a flexible cover and a protective grid 28 is placed between the insulating base carrying the contacts and the cover to prevent undue pressure on the springs. The springs may be linked by link bars 35. The set of springs 23 are provided only if a directional sense is required and where such springs are used a relay circuit as shown in Fig. 6 is provided. When a vehicle is travelling in the direction of the arrow, contacts 21, 22 close before contacts 23, 19. Relay 39 operates opening the circuit of relay 38 and closing the circuit to the control apparatus 46. Should contacts 23, 19 be closed first, relay 38 operates to open the circuit of 39, a dashpot 47 being provided to maintain the circuit open for a sufficient time to allow the vehicle to pass over contacts 22.
