Abstract

405,731. Oil engines. PARSONS, H., Brampton, Bassett, Southampton. Sept. 7, 1932, No. 24898. [Class 7 (iii).] A fuel-injection device of the type operated by pressure in the cylinder of an internalcombustion engine, comprises a spring-loaded oilfuel displacer that is also a timing device and is devoid of any means for rotating it and that is automatically actuated at the appropriate moment determined solely by the rising of the pressure of the compressible charge in the engine to a height at which it overcomes the spring load, and a non-return device controlling the supply conduit leading to the displacer, a spring loaded delivery valve in the displacer being operated by fuel oil that is displaced. Upper and lower castings 1, 2 form a cylinder in which a plunger 12 is slidably mounted. Fuel is supplied to a space 9 between the castings and passes through ports 10 in the casting 2 and channels 33 in the plunger 12 to a central chamber 62. The top of this chamber is formed by an extension 20 of a nut 21 adjustable in a headpiece 3 to limit the upward movement of the plunger. A spring-pressed needle 19 passes through the extension 20, chamber 26, and plunger 12 and has its end portion 18 enlarged. The portion 18 is disposed in a plug 13 screwed into the plunger 12 and provided with a nozzle orifice 14, the coned upper portion of which is closed by the coned end 16 of the needle 19, 18. In operation, when air pressure in a combustion chamber 5 raises the plunger 12, the ports 10 are closed and fuel is forced from the diminishing chamber 26 through passages 34, 35 to a chamber 17 surrounding the enlarged portion 18 of the needle. The coned end of the needle projects above the nozzle 14 and the fluid pressure raises the needle to provide the injection into the combustion chamber 5. In a modification, fuel is supplied axially down the hollow centre of the extension 20 past a ball valve and the needle and its control spring are housed in a plug corresponding to the plug 13. Specification 389,538 is referred to.
