[Class 102 (i).] In apparatus for regulating the flow in an open or closed conduit in accordance with the flow in a second conduit, the output of a pump supplying one of the liquids is controlled, other than by throttling the delivery therefrom, by the opposed effects of constriction-induced pressure reduction in a conduit appertaining to the pump and constriction-induced pressure reduction in another conduit. In the arrangement shown in the Figure a reciprocating pump f is driven by an hydraulic engine e supplied through a conduit d and exhausted through a conduit controlled by a valve k<1>. This valve is actuated by inlet pressure admitted through a restriction d<2> and controlled by a baffle j<1> moving to and from a jet d<3>. The baffle j<1> is actuated by a pair of opposed diaphragms c, i subject, respectively, to the pressures across a Venturi restriction b in the conduit a and the pressure across an adjustable constriction h<1> in the outlet conduit from the pump. The restriction h<1> may be arranged in a closed circuit containing an auxiliary pump m or may be placed in the inlet or exhaust conduit of the hydraulic engine. In the latter case a bye-pass arrangement is provided to compensate for the constant leakage through the engine. The interconnected diaphragm may be utilized to actuate a rheostat controlling an electric motor operating the pump. The Venturi pipe may be replaced by a throttling plate or weir.
