Abstract

404,694. Endless-belt conveyers. ROGERS, J. N. O., Gilley Law, and CHARLTON, T., High Newport Farm, both in Silksworth, near Sunderland. July 20, 1932, Nos. 20509 and 32884. [Classes 78 (i) and 78 (iv).] A readily transportable endless-belt conveyer, primarily for use in mines, and of the kind wherein the belt extends between independent discharge and return units, is characterised in that the lower run is used for conveying the material, which is discharged over a roller located within the discharge unit. The discharge unit, Fig. 2, comprises driving drums g, h coupled with a motor k which may be separate from the unit, and a discharge shoot r provided with a rubber wiper v where it abuts against the belt passing over the roller g. The shoot r may take various forms ; it may be of inverted V- shape, to discharge on both sides simultaneously, or centrally pivoted to discharge on either side at will. It may further take the form of a screen, to separate the finer from the coarser coal, or may be replaced by a plough or other discharge means. From the roller h the belt passes over rollers p on a frame n. of U - or other shape to the upper run, which may also be used for conveying. The whole unit is mounted on a sled c. The return unit, Fig. 7, comprises a frame w with rollers 4 which is mounted on a sled c and can be pivoted about a support 6 for freeing it from the belt ; the belt may alternatively be removed by breaking it or removing the rollers 4. In an alternatve form the frame u may be circular, and may be coupled by radial links to a suitable support. The drive may be placed at the return end if desired. The belt is supported between these units by trestles, Fig. 23, comprising lower rollers 73 and upper removable rollers 72 arranged to give the belt a troughed form. The upper rollers are carried by pivoted arms 58a adjustably and removably attached at 70 to supporting arms 58b, the whole device thus being collapsable. In a modification, the members 58a, 58b may be permanently secured together and adapted to pivot outwardly about the base 56. When it is desired to set up the conveyer in a new site, the return unit is removed, and a loop is formed at the discharge end. This loop 11, Fig. 9, is next slipped over a runner 9 and hauled into the new site by a rope 14 passed over suitably arranged pulleys 15 and wound in by the conveyer motor or separate haulage means. Where it is desired to have a movable discharge point, the discharge unit is mounted on rails between two fixed return units. For discharging goaf or waste material, an additional discharge unit may be provided which is movable along the length of the conveyer and is brought into use when the usual working is concluded. When the discharge point is in an elevated position, the form shown in Fig. 11 is used. Here the material is discharged on to the shoot r adjacent to an idler g<1>, the belt then passing to the driving rollers h<1> driven by the motor k through the gear box 27 and chain drive 28. The belt is then formed into a loop 22 carried by a roller b<1> on a carriage 30 slidably mounted in an elongated frame 29 for the purpose of adjusting the effective length of the conveyer, the carriage 30 being moved by a rope 40 and winch 39. Two conveyers may be discharged on to the lower run of a gate conveyer 46 as shown in Fig. 15 ; in a modification, the shoots 48 are eliminated, the lower runs d discharging direct onto the lower run of the conveyer 46.
