Abstract

404,618. Brakes. BENCE, C., 43, Mayville Road, Leytonstone, London. July 6, 1932, No. 19087. [Class 103 (i).l Brake-operating mechanism adapted to be automatically adjusted to take up wear comprises an operating lever 3 operating the brake rod 2 by means of a rack 1 and two pawls 4, 5 pivoted at 4a and 5a on the lever. In operation the pawl 5 first moves the rack until the pawl 4 engages and moves the rack whereon the pawl 5 rides up a tooth of the rack and if wear has occurred slips over the tooth. In the return movement the pawl 4 also slips over a tooth. Over the pawls is a yoke 6 pivoted at 6a and adapted to bear on teeth 4b, 5b projecting from the pawls to hold them in engagement with the rack. The rack may be replaced by a toothed drum or segment or a chain, in the meshes of which the pawls engage. The rack is first moved quickly and then the pressure is applied by the pawls 5, 4 respectively.
