404,486. Moulding tyre casings &c. GOODRICH CO., B. F., 342, Madison Avenue, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Farrington, T. B.; 735, Holladay Road, Pasadena, California, U.S.A.) March 2, 1933, No. 6387. Convention date, May 3, 1932. [Class 87 (ii).] Apparatus for forming plastic strip material such as tread strips for rubber tyres, of the kind in which an extrusion machine delivers between a pair of geared rollers, is provided with means for varying the relative speeds of the rollers and the forcing member of the extrusion machine. In the illustrated apparatus tread strips for tyres, are formed by a pair of geared rollers 19, 20 acting in conjunction with a feed screw 13. The rollers are driven by the chain 23 from the motor 15, through a change-speed-gear 24 whereby their speed can be varied relatively to that of the forcing screw. The section of the rollers forming the central thicker portion of the tread, is in line with the direct thrust of the screw, while the parts forming the thinner wing portions are offset from and on opposite sides of this line. The distance between the rollers is varied by adjusting the lower one on the eccentric bearings 20a, by means of handoperated toothed gear 28, 29. A toothengaging screw 31 fixes the roller in adjusted position. The rollers and screw casing preferably are jacketed for circulation of steam or like heating-medium.
