[Classes 75 (i) and 75 (iii).] The igniter comprises a container 1 filled with a compressed gas and provided with a valveless and wickless burner 3 adapted to be closed as by a pivoted cap 13. Compressed coal gas, methane or hydrogen may be used or a gas which can be filled in in liquid condition and changes into gaseous condition in the container. In one form, the container 1, Fig. 1, is fitted in an outer casing 10 provided with a pyrophoric ignition device 11 and the cap 13. The filling opening 1<1> is sealed by a metal plate 2 and threaded to receive a cap 8, which is screwed on the burner during storage of the container. The burner is fitted with refractory discs 4, each provided with a small opening, the openings preferably decreasing in size towards the outlet end of the burner. Alternatively, the ignition device and cap 13 may be mounted on the container 1 as by means of a detachable cap, the casing being dispensed with. In a modification, the burner 3, Fig. 3, is screwed on the filling opening 1<11> and provided with a spike 9 for piercing the sealing plate 2. The undersides of the discs 4 are cupped to provide expansion spaces 7 and the openings in the discs 4 are staggered. A catalytic device may be used for igniting hydrogen.
