Abstract
Liquid or gaseous fuels for internal-combustion engines contain 1 gram or less per litre of an arylalkylketone and/or an artificial musk compound, with or without other substances, whereby the smell of the exhaust is improved. 0.03, 0.1, and 1.0 gm. per litre are specified. Fuels mentioned are petrol, gasolene, paraffin oil, heavy oil, benzene, wood gas, and illuminating gas. Ketones specified are acetophenone, methyl aceto-phenone, 4-methoxyacetophenone, 1-naphthyl-methyl-ketone, 2-naphthyl-methyl-ketone, and homologues and derivatives thereof. Musk compounds referred to are 2.4.6-trinitro-1-methyl-3-tertiary-butyl-benzene, 2.4.6-trinitro-1.3-dimethyl-5-tertiary-butyl-benzene, 2.4.6-trinitro-3-methyl-5- tertiary-butyl-anisol, 3.5-dinitro-2.4-dimethyl-6-tertiary-butyl-acetophenone, and dinitro-tertiary-butyl-paracymene. The additional substances specified are camphor, waste camphor oil, borneol, bornyl acetate, clove oil, ionone, coumarin, indole, skatole, paracresyl-acetate, methyl anthranilate, and isopropyl methyl hydro-cinnamic aldehyde which is prepared as described in U.S.A. Specification 1,844,013. According to the Provisional Specification an aromatic substance not burning under internal-combustion engine conditions may be the substance added to the fuel. Examples include trinitrotertiary butyl toluol and many of the substances specified above.ALSO:Isopropyl methyl hydrocinnamic aldehyde is prepared, as described in U.S.A. Specification 1,844,013, by condensing cuminic aldehyde with propionic aldehyde in presence of alcoholic potash and hydrogenating the resulting isopropyl methyl cinnamic aldehyde in presence of a nickel catalyst under pressure and at a temperature up to 100 DEG C.
