Abstract

403,384. Typewriters &c. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd., Victoria House, Vernon Place, Southampton Row, London. June 17, 1932, No. 17155. Convention date, July 10, 1931. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 28, 1932.] [Class 100 (iv).] Relay type-wheel actions ; hammer-impression arrangements.-In a record-controlled or registercontrolled printing-mechanism, of the kind comprising types rotating continuously past a printing position, and a device to read the characters from the record card or register and transmit an impulse to a printing-hammer at the moment when the selected type is opposite the printing position, there is no interruption of the motion of the type at the moment of impact, but the paper is stationary. The record may be a punched card of the Hollerith or Peirce type, and the register may be a counter, and suitable means of the brush and electric contact or pin-box type are provided in each case to transmit an impulse to a magnet 11, at a time allocated to the particular character. Sets of type 24, Fig. 1, arranged in opposed pairs, one pair for each column, are mounted on a rotating drum 23, which is driven from the shaft 20 of a driving-member 36, itself connected to the main drive of the tabulator or like machine. Through a hole 26 in a shield 25 printing may be effected on paper 27 by a hammer 35, a hammer and actuating-mechanism being provided for each set of type. The driving- member 36 is a fluted roller whose teeth 37 are adapted to engage a tooth 38 on a member 39 pivoted to a lever 40, which actuates the hammer 35. When magnet 11 is energised it attracts an armature 45 and pulls back a latch lever 47, thus releasing and turning a spring- loaded lever 44. A by-pass 43 on the lever 44, thereupon depresses the member 39 until the teeth 38, 37 engage and the member 39 is moved to the right and the hammer actuated. Towards the end of its movement, the tooth 38 is lifted out of engagement by the engagement of the end of member 39 with a cam surface 51, the hammer movement is completed by momentum, and the lever 39 returns to the position of Fig. 1. The lever 44 is relatched, when all the type has passed the printing point, by the action of a cam 53, acting through levers 54 and a bail or series of arms 56 &c. depress andrelatch lever 44. The paper 27 is line-spaced by a roller 29, which is rotated by pawl-and-ratchet mechanism, actuated by a cam 33 on the shaft 22 of the drum 23. In an alternative arrangement the levers 44 and 47 are modified in shape and are adapted to be re-latched by a projection on the member 39. Specifications 247,200, [Class 100 (iv), Typewriters &c.], 356,304, and 365,169, [both in Group XIX], are referred to.
