[Class 64 (i).] A clothes-washer has a boiler 3 closed to the air and separated from a washing chamber 1 by a yielding partition 7 such as a rubber diaphragm, and the gas pressure of the boiler is intermittently and preferably automatically varied, e.g. by an intermittently operating condenser 12. The partition may consist of a sliding piston. Clothes are placed on or under a perforated domed lid 8 through which washing liquid passes on to the rubber diaphragm 7, the other side of which forms the boiler top. Water is supplied to the condenser coil 12 in the boiler periodically through a siphon 14 from a container 15 into which water trickles continuously through a choke 17. When the water level in the container 15 falls, the gas is turned off by a control 26 and a forked arm 39 connected to a water float, so as to prevent heating of the boiler during condensation. Alternatively, a rod 31 on the diaphragm 7 has projections 40 engaging a gas control arm 30 to turn the gas down when the diaphragm is raised, and up when it is lowered. When boiler pressure is excessive the supply to the gas burner 6 is regulated by a box 21 with a piston 22 which is moved in one direction by the pressure of the boiler transmitted through a pipe 24 against a spring to close the gas supply pipe 36. Byepasses 28, 32, 38 maintain the burner alight. A rubber sleeve or diaphragm may cover a hole in the boiler to allow escape of steam only when pressure is excessive. Specification 360,290 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a yielding diaphragm in the form of a liquid trap such as an oil trap. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
