Abstract

Mono-chloramine or a mixture of mono- and di-chloramine is obtained by the reaction of available chlorine on ammoniacal material in the presence of either an insoluble base, or a basic compound which is the salt of a weak acid and a strong base, in sufficient quantity to absorb all the acid liberated in the reaction. The chlorine may be employed in the form of free chlorine or hypochlorous acid and the ammoniacal material may be free ammonia or an ammonium salt such as the chloride or sulphate. Calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate and dolomite are the basic compounds referred to. The process is suitable for the production of dilute solutions of chloramines for use in the sterilization of water. According to an example such a solution is prepared by adding a mixture of calcium carbonate and ammonium chloride to water in a tank provided with stirring means, chlorine gas being subsequently added.
