[Class 18.] A joint for packing-cases and block and like structures comprises an inclined lug, bolt or dowel on one member engaging an inclined hole in the abutting member, the hole being reinforced by a metallic member apertured at an inclination corresponding to that of the lug, bolt or dowel; the dowel and hole are ensased bv a sliding movement of the members and means are provided to secure them against subsequent separation. As shown in Fig. 1, the bottom 4 of a packing case has the inclined dowels 5 secured thereto by plates 8 and the inclined holes 6 in the sides 7 are reinforced by metallic plates 10 having inclined apertures 11 corresponding to and in register with the holes 6. The sides and bottom are secured against separation by the ends 12 which are secured by bolts 13 passing through the ends and engaging reinforcing plates 15 in the edges of the top, sides and bottom of the case. The top and sides may be formed as a single structure or the top may be hinged to the sides or it may be separate therefrom in which case it is secured to the upper edges of the sides by bolts 13 and plates 15. In the case of wooden blocks 17, 18, Fig. 2, the bolt or dowel 20 on one of the members engages tubular metal reinforcing sockets 19 in inclined holes therein and the bolt may be integral with one of the sockets ; the blocks may be arranged in horizontal or vertical planes and anchored against endwise movement by members disposed at the ends of each edge or layer of blocks or distributed throughout the length of each row or layer. As shown in Fig. 3 concrete blocks 22, 23 are connected by a dowel or bolt 21 embedded in the block 22 and engaging the metal reinforcing socket 25 in the inclined hole 24 in the block 23 ; the outer faces of the socket and dowel are serrated &c. to ensure their retention in the blocks and the sides of the bolt may be flattened. The dowel may be formed integrally with the block or as a portion of a reinforcing member provided therein.
