Abstract

Cellulose esters or ethers, dyeing; regenerated celluloses, dyeing; printing.--In the production of discharge pattern effects on textile and like materials a discharging agent relatively insoluble in water is employed. Specified discharging agents are the aldehyde and ketone sulphoxylates of the alkaline earth metals and of magnesium. They are conveniently applied in the form of thickened preparations which may additionally contain swelling or penetrating agents, such as alcohol, or sodium, potassium or ammonium thiocyanate, or assistants such as anthraquinone. A small proportion of a water-soluble discharging agent may also be present. Colouring matters resistant to the discharging agent, e.g. vat dyes or their leuco compounds, may be incorporated, specified vat dyes for this purpose being Ciba yellow G, Algol scarlet C, Ciba pink B, Helindone orange R, Anthrene jade green and Indanthrene golden yellow CK. Specified dischargeable dyestuffs are the azo dyestuffs 4-nitro-2-methoxyaniline-->dimethylaniline, 4-nitraniline-->diphenylamine, aniline-->1-naphthylamine-->phenol, Dianisidine blue (dianisidine-->2-naphthol, produced on the material) and that produced on the material from diazotized p-aminobenzene - azo-dimethylaniline and b -oxynaphthoic acid. The following examples are specified. (1) A cellulose acetate fabric dyed with any of the above dischargeable dyestuffs is printed with a composition containing gum arabic, anthraquinone, alcohol, barium formaldehydesulphoxylate and potassium thiocyanate and the print is steamed for 30 minutes to obtain a white pattern on a coloured ground. (2) A cellulose acetate fabric dyed with a dischargeable ground colour is printed with a composition containing gum arabic, water, anthraquinone, alcohol and magnesium formaldehydesulphoxylate and the print is finished as in (1). (3) A cellulose acetate fabric dyed as in (1) is printed with a composition containing gum arabic, water, anthraquinone, alcohol and calcium formaldehydesulphoxylate and the print is finished as in (1). (4) A cellulose acetate fabric dyed with a dischargeable ground colour is treated locally with a composition containing Indanthrene golden yellow CK, anthraquinone, gum arabic, water, caustic soda, sodium hydrosulphite, sodium formaldehydesulphoxylate, barium formaldehydesulphoxylate, alcohol and potassium thiocyanate and the print is steamed for 10 minutes and further treated in a bath containing soap and sodium perborate to obtain a yellow pattern on a coloured ground. The process is applicable to materials made of or containing cellulose esters or ethers, cotton, regenerated cellulose or animal fibres such as wool or silk.
