Abstract

401,797. Lubricating bearings. YOUATT C. S. and RHODES, BRYDON, & YOUATT, Ltd., Goosey Mount Street, Stockport. July 1, 1932, No. 18622. [Classes 12 (i), 12 (ii), and 12 (iii).] A bearing for vertical shafts comprises a sleeve a of a metal, such as graphite - impregnated - bronze, which is permeable by oil, and a bearing housing c having one or more slots or pockets d from which lubricant passes through the sleeve to the bearing surface, where it is carried upwards by means of one or more spiral grooves in the bearing surface of the sleeve or of the shaft itself and returned to the pockets d. Inserts b of material such as cane which is permeable by oil may be used instead of a porus sleeve a. In Fig. 1, a single spiral groove f is arranged in the bearing surface of the sleeve a. The pockets d contain absorbent material such as wool yarn. Excess oil from a supply fitting h is thrown clear of the pockets d by a collar i and is drained off at j.
