[Class 24.] Relates to the manufacture of chains of the type in which the links have a small eye and a large eye at right-angles to each other. In one form a piece of wire or strip 3, Fig. 5, is bent into a loop, the sides of the loop are brought together to form two eyes, Fig. 6, and the doubled part is bent over to bring the eyes into coincidence and form a small eye at right-angles thereto. The joins are soldered or welded, and circular wire when used is flattened during the making of the link. According to another method of manufacture, Figs. 18 and 19, a strip 11 is slit at both ends, the slits opened and formed into loops, and the blank folded about the solid part of the strips. Another method is shown in Figs. 15 and 16, in which a flat strip 6 is bent to form a small eye at the centre and the free ends are bent to form a large eye at right-angles. The eyes are joined by welding and the central portion of the strip is made wider and thinner than the remainder. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 401,633. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
