The hair engaging elements 1 each comprise a strip of metal, celluloid, or other resilient materal enclosed in a rubber or like sheath 1<1> which is formed with a helical groove 10, or with a series of inclined grooves, the groove or grooves on adjacent elements being oppositely inclined. In the modification shown m Fig. 3, the grooved hair engaging elements 1 are arranged to extend transversely of the head and are threaded at the ends 3 on rings 11 carrying a brow band 12 and chin ribbons 7. An elastic cord 13, secured to the centres of the band 12 and the rearmost hair engaging element, passes with a friction fit through a hole in the centre of each of the other hair engaging elements.
