Abstract

401,017. Electromagnetic switches; electrically-tripped switches. HARVEY, T., 348, St. Georges Road, Glasgow. May 11, 1932, No. 13538. [Class 38 (v).] In a switch of the kind in which the circuit is alternately closed and opened through a pawl and ratchet or pinwheel device by successive energizations of a winding 1, the movable contact-member 22 of the switch is carried by a shaft 21 adapted to be rocked by the engagement of an arm 20 on the shaft with one of a pair of spaced pins 14 which project from one side of the ratchet or pin wheel. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, a pawl 16 pivoted to a rod 18 connected to the core of the winding 1 is adapted to engage pins 14, 15 connecting a pair of discs 10, alternate pins 14 projecting from the face of one of the discs. A retaining pawl 19 prevents backward rotation of the discs. The rod 18 may carry additional contacts 23 adapted to close the circuit of a second solenoid, so that a number of switches may be operated simultaneously. In a modification, Fig. 3, the pawl 26 is carried by an arm 27 connected to the armature of an electromagnet 29, and cooperates with a ratchet wheel 24 provided with the pins 14. A coil 33 may be adapted to act on any suitable part of the mechanism, such as the retaining pawl 19, to release the discs 10 or ratchet wheel 24, and allow the switch to open, in the event of an overload. The rod 18 may carry a handle 18<1> for manual operation.
