[Class 7 (ii).] In a multi-cylinder engine each piston acts by means of two connecting-rods on oppositely rotating shafts, and each element, comprising a cylinder, piston, two connecting-rods and two shafts, corresponds to another element symmetrically placed with regard to the centre of the engine, the pairs of cylinders being coaxial. Where the cylinders are radially arranged, each crank pin may be connected to two connecting- rods, one from each of the adjoining cylinders. Connecting links, longitudinally or transversely arranged, may be interposed between the twin connecting-rods and their driving piston. The coaxial cylinders may be merged into a single cylinder containing oppositely moving pistons, the drive being transmitted through helicoidal gearing to a shaft parallel to the cylinder axis. Auxiliary cylinders connected by single rods to the shaft and which may be used as compressors may be placed in the angles between the main cylinders. Cylinders of more than one diameter may be used. The drive from the shafts e<1>, e<2> may be transmitted to a propeller through an encircling internally toothed crown wheel and that from the oppositely moving shafts f<1> , f<2> to a pinion h<3> on the propeller shaft. Alternatively, two internallytoothed crown wheels attached to oppositely moving propellers may be used.
