Abstract
Oil-soluble resinous compositions prepared by condensing the methyl or ethyl ethers of 1 : 3 : 5-xylenol with formaldehyde or other compounds containing a reactive methylene group in an acid medium in the presence or absence of a solvent are converted into coating compositions by mixing with drying oils, semidrying oils or nitrocellulose, In examples 1 : 3 : 5-xylenol methyl or ethyl ether is condensed with formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid and the product after heating with tung oil is dissolved in mineral spirits containing cobalt linoleate. The condensation product is soluble in linseed, tung, perilla, soya bean oils, stand and bodied oils and is compatible with nitrocellulose.ALSO:Oil-soluble resinous compositions are prepared by condensing the methyl or ethyl ether of 1 : 3 : 5-xylenol with formaldehyde or other compounds containing a reactive methylene group in an acid medium. The products may be converted into coating compositions by mixing with drying or semi-drying oils or nitro-cellulose. Suitable acids are hydrochloric, sulphuric, trichloracetic, acetic, oxalic, or citric acid or an acid-reacting substance such as potassium hydrogen sulphate. A solvent, such as methylated spirit, may be used. The resins are soluble in ethyl and butyl acetates, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, cyclohexanol, diacetone alcohol, benzene and xylene. In examples: (1) 1 : 3 : 5-xylenol methyl ether is condensed with formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid. To obtain a varnish the product is heated with tung oil and dissolved in mineral spirits containing cobalt linoleate. (2) The raw materials of example (1) are condensed to give a resin soluble in linseed, tung, perilla, soya bean oils and stand and bodied oils. It is also soluble in acetone, diacetone alcohol, benzene, xylene, ethyl and butyl acetates, ethylene glycol, monoethyl ether, cyclohexanol, hot butyl alcohol, hot turpentine and hot mineral spirits and it is insoluble in methylated spirits. It forms clear films with nitrocellulose. By heating the resins its melting point may be raised. (3) 1 : 3 : 5-xylenol ethyl ether may replace the methyl ether in claim (1).
