Abstract

Insoluble azo dyes are made on the fibre by applying a mixture which contains an alkali salt of a hydrazine sulphonic acid of the general formula: <FORM:0398846/IV/1> where x and y = substituents, such as alkyl, alkoxy or halogen, and an alkali salt of a hydroxylated coupling component which combines in the adjacent position to the hydroxy group, and then steaming. The free coupling component together with the equivalent amount of alkali may also be used and dyeing or printing assistants may be added. In examples the following mixtures are specified: (1)-(3) 4-benzoylamino-2 : 5-dimethoxybenzene-1-hydrazine sulpho acid and diacetoacetyl-o-tolidine, 2<1> - oxyanthracene - 3<1> - carboyl-1 - amino - 2 - methylbenzene, 3 - benzoyl-amino - 2 - naphthol, 2<1> : 3<1> - oxynaphthoyl-1-amino - 2 - methoxy - 4 - chlorbenzene; (4) 4 - benzoylamino - 2 - chlor - 5 - methoxy - benzene - 1 - hydrazine sulpho acid and 2 : 3 - oxynaphthoic acid a - naphthylamide; (5) 4 - benzoylamino - 2 - methoxy - 5 - methylbenzene - 1 - hydrazine sulpho acid and the m-nitranilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid. In a table the following additional components are given: the hydrazine sulphonic acids of 1 - amino - 4 - benzoylamino - 2 : 5 - diethoxybenzene, 1 - amino - 4 - acetylamino - 2 : 5 dimethoxy or dimethyl-benzene, 1 - amino-4-(phenoxyacetylamino) - 2 : 5 - dimethoxybenzene, and 1-amino-4- (4<1>-methylbenzene-1<1>-sulphoylamino) - 2 : 5 - dimethoxybenzene; b -naphthol, 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, 1 - naphthol - 4 - phenylketone, 2<1>-hydroxycarbazole - 3<1> - carboyl - (1 - amino - 4 - chlorobenzene), o-anisidide, 4-methoxy-2-methyl-1-anilide, o-phenetidide and anilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid. Hydrazine sulphonic acids referred to above are made by reducing the corresponding diazosulphonates, e.g. with zinc dust and acetic acid, or with sodium hydrosulphite.
