Abstract

397,486. Screw propellers. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION, 105, West Adams Street, Chicago, U.S.A. Jan. 20, 1932, No. 1734. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1931. [Class 114.] The pitch of the blades of a screw propeller is varied in accordance with the difference between the air thrust on the blades and the driving torque of the shaft. The blades 6 are rotatably mounted in the hub 9 by a split sleeve 19 gripped by a pinion 18 and mounted in bearings 21, 22. The hub is mounted upon helical rows of balls 10a provided in a block 10 fitted upon the splined shaft 7. Springs 23 are mounted between the hub 9 and a plate 17 rotatably mounted upon the block 10, the plate 17 also carrying rack bars 15 which engage the pinions 18. The driving torque tends to set the blades at a maximum pitch and the air thrust tends to reduce the pitch and the springs are adjusted so that the blades take up a position which is proportional to the difference of these two values. Weights 24 are pivoted to the hub and are formed with quadrants engaging the pinion 18 and the centrifugal force tends to increase the pitch to balance the torsion acting on the blades which tends to decrease the pitch.
