Abstract

397,471. Filters. SERCK RADIATORS, Ltd. and WAGNER, C. 0., Warwick Road, Greet, Birmingham. Feb. 13, 1932, No. 4287. [Class 46.] A filtering-apparatus of the kind comprising a metal or other strip or a wire coiled into a spiral form, and inner and outer parts to which the ends of the coil are secured, relatively movable to vary the tension of the coil and d consequently the width of the spaces between the convolutions, is characterized by the provision of a rotary or oscillatory brush or scraper which assists the reverse flow in cleaning the filter. As shown in the Figure, the coil a is secured at its ends to rings e, d, the ring e being adjustably rotated by the square-ended spindle f whilst the ring d is feathered, to prevent rotation, in the casing g. The coil assembly which is retained in position by a spring wire clip i, rests on a ring j having a central boss and cross bar l which supports the spiral, whilst the central boss and the ring j seal the filter at the regions of the junctions of the spiral with the rings e, d. The filter is cleaned by reverse flow, and brushes o on a manually rotatable shaft m assist in the removal of the solid material which is collected in a trap r. In a modification, the inner ring e is held stationary whilst the outer ring d is rotatable for adjustment by a manually-operated pinion engaging gear teeth on the outer edge of the ring d. The brush o is operated from above, the shaft passing through the stationary centre ring e. In a further modification, the outer ring d is held stationary as shown in the Figure, but the inner ring e is secured to an upstanding sleeve carrying a gear wheel which is meshed with a gear wheel on a hand-wheel shaft whereby the inner ring e is adjusted. The hand-wheel shaft carrying the cleaning brush passes through the sleeve, the brush as before being beneath the spiral The brush carries, in addition to the bristles, a rigid metal strip which serves both as a scraper and a support for the underside of the filter coil. If desired a plurality of filtering elements may be superposed either in contact or with intermediate spaces with a brush or scraper in each space.
