Abstract
395,682. Driving, turning, and planing machines; copying and reproducing mechanism. MANNESMANNRÍHREN. WERKE, 1B, Berger Ufer, D³sseldorf, Germany. Oct. 15, 1931, No. 28684. Convention date, Dec. 15, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 83 (iii).] In a metal-cutting machine employing a tool similar to a turning tool, the tool is set to its required position or moved in conformity with a desired pattern by means of a servo-motor. As applied to a planing-machine, the vertically adjustable slide 4, Fig. 2, carrying the tool-box 5 is moved by screws 3 driven from an electric motor 1. A reversing switch for the motor comprises contact blades 7, movable by a screw 6 operated by hand in conjunction with a fixed scale 8, and blades 10 movable by a screw 11 driven from the motor 1. In operation, the part 7 of the switch is set to a desired point on the scale 8, whereupon the motor 1 is started and the slide 4 is moved to a corresponding position on the vertical pillars of the machine. On attaining the position the part 10 of the switch is moved by the screw 11 to open the switch and thus stop the tool in the exact required position. As applied to a copying- lathe, the tool 13, Fig. 4, is carried by a transverse slide 14 mounted on a longitudinal slide 15. The screw 24 for the slide 14 carries a pinion 23 engaging a rack 22 mounted on the pistonrod 21 of a hydraulic cylinder 20 attached to the slide 15. A control valve 27 for the cylinder is connected thereto by flexible pipes 25 and has its reciprocating valve connected by the linkage shown to a roller 30 co-operating with a fixed template 31 and also to a link 29 on the piston-rod 21. In operation, as the slide 15 is traversed slowly along the rotating work 12 the roller 30 moves along the template 31 and thereby displaces the valve 27 from its mean position and causes a corresponding movement of the tool, the link 29 tending constantly to restore the valve to the mean position and consequently giving the tool a path similar to that of the roller 30. The scale of the work may be made to bear any desired relation to that of the template by varying the linkage connected to the valve 27 and the pitch of the screw 24.
